« The hectic life of stellar binaries: how to produce binary neutron stars »

Clément Pellouin
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

Binary Neutron Star (BNS) mergers are a unique probe to poorly understood physics: equation of state of matter in the extreme conditions of neutron stars interiors, matter ejection mechanisms, gravitational-wave physics, ... With more statistics, they can even be used to constrain cosmological parameters. One key ingredient to constrain physical models is to have a precise idea of the BNS merger rate.
In this presentation, I will show you the mechanisms of binary stellar evolution that lead to the birth of neutron star binaries. The different stellar evolutionary stages will lead us through phases of mass exchanges by winds, kicks at birth after supernova explosion and common envelope. I will show the underlying physics of these phases and the final consequences on the merger rate. All along, I will present the numerical challenges that simulations have to face.
If you want to know the gossips of stellar couples, this is the place!
